Family and Friends: Something to be Thankful For
Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving has to be one of my absolute favorite holidays. It’s one filled with family, friends, food, and reminders of all the things we should be thankful for.
Yesterday, I was picking up some last minute items (breakfast!) from WinCo to take back to Alaska with me. I stood in line with my English muffins, cream cheese, and avocados. In front of me was an older gentleman with a single serving of frozen turkey TV dinner, frozen mashed potatoes, and a pumpkin pie. My heart sank. I am so lucky to have a family. I’m lucky to have such a wonderful family. I’m lucky to have people who love and care about me to spend the holidays with. My first instinct was to buy this man’s meal–after all, he was eating a frozen meal alone on Thanksgiving. Then I second guessed myself–what if this guy gets mad at me because he interprets a kind gesture as one of pity? What if this is his yearly ritual, of having a frozen meal the night before he gets together with his family because they are awful at cooking turkey? I didn’t know how to approach the situation properly, so I let it be. Instead, I’ve chosen to let this serve as a reminder of all the wonderful things I have in my life.
